Everyone talks about oxidised silver. The word is convenient, but strictly speaking it is wrong. Silver barely reacts with oxygen at room temperature. What turns it black is sulphur: the sulphur compounds present in the air, in perspiration and in many everyday products.
On contact with these compounds, silver forms silver sulphide on the surface. That layer is straw yellow at first, then brown, then dark grey, and finally black.
Two practical consequences follow. The black is a surface layer: your jewellery is not damaged, it is tarnished. And because the phenomenon is superficial, a gentle method is almost always enough. Bringing out the heavy artillery is like cracking a nut with a blacksmith's hammer.
Why silver tarnishes faster on some skins
This is the most common question, and the worst answered. Two people wear the same ring. On one, it stays bright for a year. On the other, it darkens in three weeks. The quality of the silver is not what is at fault.
The composition of perspiration varies a great deal from one person to another. It contains sulphur compounds in variable quantities. The more there are, the faster the sulphidation.
Skin pH plays a part too. Acidic skin speeds up the reaction with the copper in the 925 silver alloy.
Diet counts. Garlic, onion and eggs temporarily increase the amount of sulphur compounds the skin releases. Certain medical treatments also change perspiration. It is a common cause of sudden tarnishing in someone who had never had the problem.
The environment completes the picture. A damp bathroom, a polluted city atmosphere, a heat source: all of it speeds up the process. In other words, silver that tarnishes quickly is not poor quality silver. It is silver that meets a lot of sulphur.
The 3 safe methods for cleaning tarnished silver
These three methods work on bare 925 silver. They do not scratch and they do not attack the alloy.
1. The silver polishing cloth. A cloth impregnated with a very fine cleaning agent. You rub gently, dry, on smooth surfaces. The result is immediate on light to moderate tarnish. It is the safest method for a piece of bare silver jewellery. Two important reservations: never use a polishing cloth on vermeil, and never on rhodium plated silver either. 2. Lukewarm soapy water and a very soft brush. A little neutral soap in lukewarm water, never boiling. A soft bristled brush kept for that purpose. Brush gently, rinse, dry completely. This method does not remove the sulphide, but it lifts the greasy film, the cream residue and the dust that dull the shine. On a lot of jewellery, that is already 70 % of the problem.
3. A cleaning product formulated for silver, applied to specific areas. A cream or a foam designed for jewellery. Apply it with cotton wool, leave it for the stated time, rinse, dry. The difference with a soaking bath is control: you choose the areas you treat and you stay away from the setting.
Drying is never optional. Jewellery put away damp tarnishes again very quickly.
The methods to keep for specific cases
These methods are not forbidden, but they call for precise conditions. Used blindly, they do damage.
Baking soda paste. Baking soda and very little water make a slightly abrasive paste. On bare, solid 925 silver with no stone, it works. On everything else, no. Baking soda scratches mirror polished surfaces, lodges in the recesses of a setting, and wears away the gold layer on vermeil.
The ultrasonic cleaner. Effective for dislodging dirt under a stone. But the vibrations can finish off a prong that was already tired. A diamond, laboratory-grown or mined, is not at risk in itself. Its setting is. Keep it for a workshop that checks the piece before and after.
Shop bought soaking baths. The risk is not the product, it is the duration and the area treated. A bath acts everywhere, including where you did not want it to. Respect the soaking time and rinse at length.
The methods never to use on jewellery
The baking soda and aluminium foil bath. It is the star of every tips website. The principle is real: contact between aluminium, baking soda and hot water triggers a reaction that converts the silver sulphide back. The black disappears spectacularly. That is not where the problem lies.
This bath is completely uncontrollable. It acts on the whole piece, fully immersed, hot. On a set piece, the hot water and the residue seep under the stone and into the prongs, and it becomes impossible to rinse properly. A whitish deposit often stays stuck under the stone, which loses its fire.
On vermeil it is worse. You are applying a hot alkaline bath to a gold layer a few microns thick. You risk dulling it, and the rubbing that follows finishes it off. To be banned on set pieces and on vermeil, without exception.
Toothpaste. It contains abrasives designed for tooth enamel, not for a soft metal. It scratches silver irreversibly. The piece looks clean at the time, but its mirror polish is dead. It will then get dirty faster.
White vinegar and lemon juice. These are acids. They attack the copper in the 925 silver alloy and leave matt, uneven patches.
Baking soda rubbed on dry. Abrasive powder on a soft metal. Same consequence as toothpaste, only faster.
Household products. Strippers, descalers and above all bleach, which attacks silver lastingly.
Cleaning a silver ring set with a stone
This is the blind spot of every article of this kind. You are told how to clean a silver cup, then the same recipe is applied to a set ring. They are two different objects. Three areas need attention.
Underneath the stone. That is where soap, cream and dust build up. Light no longer gets in, and a dirty diamond stops sparkling, however perfectly it is cut. It is almost always the real reason a stone has gone dull.
The prongs. They are fine and they bend. Every rough movement can shift them, especially in 925 silver, which is softer than 18 carat gold.
The recesses of the setting. Any powder that gets in there stays there. That is why baking soda is not advised on a set piece.
The safe routine is simple. A few minutes in a lukewarm soapy bath. Very gentle brushing from underneath the stone, never on the prongs. Plenty of rinsing. Complete drying with a soft cloth.

Rhodium plated silver: the one that barely tarnishes
There is an answer to the tarnishing problem, and it comes earlier in the process. It is called rhodium plating.
Rhodium is a metal from the platinum family. It is very hard, of a cool, luminous white, and above all it is chemically inert. Sulphur does not attack it. Deposited as a very thin layer on a piece of 925 silver jewellery, it forms a barrier between the metal and the air.
The result is simple. Rhodium plated silver does not sulphidise as long as the layer is intact. No black, no polishing cloth, no cleaning ritual. It is also the same treatment 18 carat white gold receives, for the same reasons of whiteness and durability.

How to care for rhodium plated silver jewellery
The rule fits into one sentence: never treat it like bare silver.
Everything that cleans tarnished silver works by micro abrasion or by chemical attack. The polishing cloth, the baking soda paste, the stripping baths. On bare silver, these methods remove a layer of sulphide. On rhodium plated silver, there is no sulphide to remove. So all they remove is the rhodium.
For a rhodium plated piece, one method is enough. Lukewarm soapy water, a very soft bristled brush, rinsing, complete drying with a soft cloth. That is all. The shine comes back because what was dulling the piece was a greasy film, not oxidation.
Rhodium plating wears down, and here is how you can tell
Let us be honest about this. A rhodium layer stays very thin. It eventually wears away at the points of friction.
The pace depends on the piece. A pair of studs can keep its rhodium plating for years. A ring worn every day, rubbing against keys, keyboard and door handles, wears down faster, especially on the top of the band.
The sign is recognisable. The darkening does not arrive evenly, as it does on bare silver. It appears in patches, at the contact points, where the rhodium has gone and the silver is exposed again.
A piece in that state is not finished. It gets re-plated in a workshop. The piece is cleaned, repolished if needed, then dipped again in an electrolytic bath. It comes out as good as new. The cost varies with the workshop and the complexity of the piece, and a set piece calls for more care than a plain band.
The practical consequence is reassuring. If your rhodium plated silver ring starts to mark in places after two or three years of daily wear, it is not a defect. It is normal wear, and it can be repaired.
Tarnished vermeil, the great blind spot of home remedies
This paragraph may save you from destroying a piece of jewellery. Vermeil is 925 silver covered with a layer of gold at least 5 microns thick, that is five thousandths of a millimetre. Almost every method that works on silver is aggressive. On that thickness, they do not clean, they remove.
The silver polishing cloth is out. It contains a polishing agent. On vermeil, it takes gold off, gently but surely. The baking soda and foil bath is out, as seen above. Baking soda paste, toothpaste, lemon and vinegar are out too.
What is left? Two things. A soft dry cloth, wiped without pressure. And lukewarm, very lightly soapy water, followed by immediate and complete drying.
One important point. If your vermeil has turned black, it is not the gold that has darkened. Gold at 750 thousandths does not sulphidise. It is the silver showing through where the gilding has worn away or never covered perfectly, often inside a band or on an edge. In that case, no cleaning will restore the colour. Only re-gilding can.
Stopping silver from tarnishing: the storage that changes everything
The best cleaning is the one you never have to do. Almost nobody talks about it, even though it is the most effective lever there is.
Store your jewellery dry, away from the air. A closed pouch, a lined box, a zip bag: anything that limits air circulation limits sulphidation. Anti tarnish strips are very effective on pieces that are rarely worn.
Stay out of the bathroom: humidity, heat, cosmetic vapours. Avoid rubber, wool and certain cardboards too, which release sulphur compounds.
Take your jewellery off before the shower, the pool and the sea. Put on your creams, your perfume and your hairspray before you put it on, never after.
Rotate your pieces. Jewellery worn regularly often tarnishes more slowly, because the gentle rubbing of fabric maintains the surface. Conversely, a piece forgotten for six months in an open drawer almost always comes out black.
