Les diamants jaunes - Lauredi

Yellow Diamonds

The yellow diamond draws its sunlit hue from tiny traces of nitrogen incorporated into its crystal structure. This natural colour—a radiant, vivid yellow once reserved for royal collections such as the famous Tiffany Yellow—is now within reach thanks to our lab-grown diamonds.

Why is the diamond blue?

You may wonder why diamonds are blue? This fascinating color is explained by traces of boron in its crystalline structure. This element, captured during diamond formation, changes how the stone absorbs light.

Each blue diamond is unique, as its color depends on the boron concentration, which is never the same from one stone to another.

Synthetic blue diamonds.

Synthetic diamonds, also known as lab-grown diamonds, are man-made diamonds created by reproducing the extreme temperature and pressure conditions that allow natural diamonds to form in the earth.

For colored diamonds, like blue mine diamonds, the hue is also achieved by introducing the necessary chemical elements, such as boron.

Introducing

The blue diamond: a statistical rarity

Less than 0.1% of diamonds mined worldwide display this natural color. This translates to two blue diamonds for every 10,000 diamonds extracted from mines.

The Cullinan mine in South Africa has historically been the main source of blue diamonds, though production remains irregular. The simultaneous discovery of five blue diamonds in 2020 demonstrates this rarity: the event was remarkable enough to be reported by international trade media.

Diamonds exceeding one carat represent an even more pronounced rarity, which justifies the blue diamond prices observed in reference markets.

Introducing

Famous Yellow Diamonds

History includes several exceptional yellow diamonds that have left their mark on royal and private collections.

The Tiffany Yellow remains the undisputed benchmark in this category. This 128.54-carat yellow diamond, discovered in 1877 in the Kimberley mines in South Africa, displays a highly sought-after intense Fancy Yellow color. Acquired by Charles Lewis Tiffany, it became the emblem of the Tiffany & Co. maison. Only two women have worn it publicly: Mrs. Sheldon Whitehouse at the 1957 Tiffany Ball and Audrey Hepburn for the promotional photographs of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1961.
More recently, Beyoncé wore it at the 2022 Oscars.

Other specimens have also gained international recognition, notably the Incomparable (407.48 carats), one of the largest cut yellow diamonds in the world, and the Florentine (137.27 carats), whose history traces back to the Medici and the Habsburgs.
