Almost every page about the order of rings stops at two. Wedding band and engagement ring, front or back, end of story. Yet a real life sequence often runs to four. A promise ring at the start. An engagement ring next. A wedding band on the wedding day. An eternity ring years later. Four rings, one hand, and a question nobody asks: in what order do you stack them so they do not damage each other. Here is the full sequence, the tradition, and one criterion you will not find anywhere else.

The four tiers: promise, engagement, wedding, eternity
Let us take the sequence in chronological order. Each ring arrives at a precise moment and says something different.
The promise ring. It comes first, sometimes years before the rest. It states a commitment without a date, and it has no official wearing code.
The engagement ring. It marks an intention to marry. Traditionally this is the ring with the stone, the solitaire.
The wedding band. It is exchanged on the wedding day. It is the plain band, with or without stones.
The eternity ring. It comes later. A birth, a wedding anniversary, or simply the wish for one. It is often set all the way around.
Nobody wears all four on the same finger. It would be uncomfortable and unreadable. So the question is not only the order. It is also what stays on the finger and what moves elsewhere.
In what order to wear a wedding band and an engagement ring
The traditional French rule is short. The wedding band goes on first, meaning at the base of the finger. The engagement ring sits above it, towards the knuckle.
The classic explanation invokes closeness to the heart. There is a more concrete reason: the wedding band never leaves the finger, the engagement ring comes off more often. Placing the ring that moves most on the outside is simply more practical.
Wedding band in front of or behind the engagement ring, then. Behind, meaning closer to the hand. That is the majority convention, not an obligation. Two cases justify reversing it. A high set solitaire that catches the little finger or the middle finger. Or two rings that do not nest and leave a visible gap. Try both positions for a week before you decide.
The order set by metal hardness, not by tradition
Here is the criterion tradition ignores completely, and the one that should really decide your stack.
Two rings worn side by side rub against each other constantly. That friction follows a simple law: the harder material marks the softer one. It is never mutual.
On a hand, the hardness order runs like this. Diamond, by far the hardest. Then 18 carat white gold, generally harder than yellow gold. Then 18 carat yellow gold. Then 925 silver, the softest. Vermeil is a case apart: it is 925 silver covered with a thin layer of gold, so the surface wears before the metal does.
Three practical consequences, worth knowing before you stack.
A set diamond scratches the metal of the ring next to it. This is the point most often discovered too late. An eternity ring set all the way around, worn against a smooth wedding band, scratches that band within months. If you want an immaculate wedding band, do not sit it against a set ring.
Mixing silver and 18 carat gold on the same finger wears the silver. The gold digs a groove into the silver at the contact point. The silver does not mark the gold. Repolishing removes the mark, but it takes away a little material every time.
Vermeil should never be stacked. The gold layer is thin. In permanent contact with another ring it wears locally and lets a silver line show along the edge. For a stack worn every day, choose 925 silver throughout, or recycled 18 carat gold throughout.
The general rule to remember: in a stack, place rings of the same metal side by side, and keep set rings away from the smooth surfaces you want to protect. Our care guide completes these habits.
Where the promise ring goes once the engagement arrives
This is the real blind spot. Every page explains the wedding band and engagement ring order. None says what becomes of the promise ring the day the engagement ring arrives.
Three solutions exist, and they are equally valid.
Change finger. The promise ring leaves the ring finger and moves to the index, the middle finger or the little finger. Often on the other hand. This is the simplest solution. It frees the ring finger for the engagement then wedding sequence, and nothing is lost.
Keep it in the stack, in the outer position. It becomes the top ring, the one furthest from the hand. Mind the hardness rule: if it is 925 silver and the other two are gold, it will take the marks.
Transform it. A silver promise ring can be remade in the same design in recycled 18 carat gold. Its stone can also be reset on a pendant or a right hand ring. This is an upcycling approach that keeps the meaning of the piece and changes its use.
What you should not do: put it away in a drawer. A jewel that never comes out is no longer a jewel.
The eternity ring, where to place it in the stack
The eternity ring arrives last in time, but not necessarily last on the finger.
The most widespread convention places it on the outside, above the engagement ring. The stack then reads like this, from the hand towards the knuckle: wedding band, engagement, eternity.
A second convention slots it between the wedding band and the engagement ring. The visual effect is better balanced when the solitaire is high, because the eternity ring fills the gap under the basket.
The hardness criterion decides better than taste. An eternity ring is edged with diamonds all the way around. Placed between two bands, it scratches two. Placed on the outside, it scratches only one.
There is one very practical alternative: wear the eternity ring on its own, on the ring finger of the other hand. It touches nothing, it does not wear, and it shows better.
Wedding band on the left hand or the right hand, by country
The question comes up constantly, and the answer takes very few lines.
In France, the wedding band and the engagement ring are worn on the left ring finger. That is the dominant custom, not a law.
Elsewhere the custom changes. In Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia and Norway, the wedding band is worn on the right ring finger. In several of those traditions the engagement ring stays on the left before the wedding, then the wedding band moves to the right afterwards. In India, the right hand is favoured for jewellery.
None of these customs binds you. A left handed person often puts her wedding band on the right to avoid knocks. That is a perfectly valid reason.
Wearing your rings on two different fingers
Stacking is not compulsory. Splitting them up is a real option, and it settles a lot of problems.
The most common arrangement: the wedding band stays on the left ring finger, the engagement ring moves to the right ring finger. Both rings show better. They no longer touch, so they no longer wear against each other.
A second arrangement keeps the wedding band alone on the ring finger and moves the rest to the index or the middle finger. The index carries bold stone rings very well. The middle finger suits wide bands.
This split matters most when the metals differ. You want to wear a 925 silver ring and a recycled 18 carat gold ring? Separate the fingers. The wear problem disappears.
Civil partnership, second marriages, ring order for a man
Every guide reasons on a single scenario: engagement then marriage. Reality is more varied.
For a civil partnership. There is no wedding band and no tradition. The PACS ring, the French civil partnership ring, is very often worn on the right ring finger, precisely to set it apart from a wedding band. If a marriage follows, the PACS ring often stays on the right and the wedding band takes the left.
For a second marriage. Many people have the old wedding band transformed rather than keeping it as it is. The metal is melted down, the stone is reset. No rule of etiquette applies, only your own comfort.
For a man. The subject barely exists online, although it is simple. A man who wears a wedding band and a signet ring does not stack them: the band on the ring finger, the signet on the little finger, often on the other hand. Same logic with a promise ring. Stacking stays rare among men, and that is rather good news for how long the pieces last.
If you are missing the definitions, our article on the types of rings sets them out clearly.
What to remember
French tradition gives an order: wedding band at the base of the finger, engagement ring above it, eternity ring on the outside. The promise ring leaves the ring finger when the engagement arrives.
But tradition says nothing about wear, and wear is what will decide the state of your rings in ten years. Keep three reflexes. Do not sit a set ring against a smooth band you want immaculate. Do not stack vermeil. Do not mix 925 silver and 18 carat gold on the same finger.
And if the stack does not suit you, split it over two fingers. It is more comfortable and it protects the pieces. An engagement ring that no longer works in the stack can also become a pendant.
To see the models that stack well, the engagement collection brings together the low profiles and the compatible bands.
To go further. If you are putting a pair together, see couple rings, choosing together. On the first ring in the sequence, read the promise ring. And if budget guides the choice, our article on the silver engagement ring sets out what each bracket allows.
FAQ
In what order do you wear a wedding band and an engagement ring?
In France, the wedding band goes at the base of the finger and the engagement ring above it. The practical reason is that the wedding band never leaves the finger. Nothing stops you reversing them if the two rings nest better the other way round.
Wedding band in front of or behind the engagement ring?
Behind, meaning on the palm side, in the French convention. That position also protects it better from knocks. Try both ways for a few days, comfort decides faster than tradition.
Can you stack a silver ring and an 18 carat gold ring?
Yes, but the silver will come out marked. 18 carat gold is harder and digs a groove into the silver at the contact point. Separating the two rings by one finger settles the problem for good.
Where do you place the eternity ring in the stack?
On the outside, above the engagement ring, in the most common usage. It is also the safest placement, because a ring set all the way around scratches the bands next to it. Wearing it on its own on the other hand is an excellent alternative.
What becomes of the promise ring after the engagement?
It usually changes finger, often to the other hand. It can also stay in the outer position in the stack. A third route is to have it transformed, into a pendant or a right hand ring.
Wedding band on the left hand or the right hand in France?
Left hand, ring finger, in the dominant French usage. Germany, Poland, Russia and Norway favour the right hand. None of these customs is binding.
Can you wear a wedding band and an engagement ring on two different fingers?
Yes, and it is often more comfortable. The two rings no longer rub against each other, so they wear less. It is the best solution when the metals differ.
