One detail few pages mention: before Fancy Light, the grading also provides for Faint, Very Light and Light. These are very pale colours, visible on a report, barely visible on the finger.
Why a diamond is yellow: the nitrogen story
A diamond is pure crystallised carbon. Perfectly pure carbon produces no colour at all. The stone is colourless.
Yellow comes from an intruder. Nitrogen. Nitrogen atoms take the place of some carbon atoms in the crystal lattice. That substitution changes the way the stone absorbs light. Nitrogen absorbs part of the blue and violet in the spectrum. What comes back out is yellow.
