What is vermeil?
In France, vermeil is strictly defined: a 925 silver base coated with a layer of gold of at least 750 parts per thousand, that is 18 carat, and at least 5 microns thick. Below that, it is gilded or plated silver, not vermeil.
Vermeil or gold plated
Gold plating lays a layer of gold over a base metal. Vermeil lays it over solid silver: if the gilding wears at friction points, it is silver that shows through, and the gilding can be redone in the workshop. Read our comparison of vermeil, gold plated and silver.
Vermeil diamond ring
The stones in our vermeil rings are real lab grown diamonds, never cubic zirconia: the Andrea solitaire, the Loop with a pear diamond, the art deco Faubourg 1925, the Mme La Marquise with a marquise cut.
Vermeil engagement ring
Vermeil gives the look of a yellow gold engagement ring on a lighter budget. For a ring worn every day for decades, 18k gold remains the most durable solid metal: vermeil lets you start, then move to gold in the same design.
